It isn’t clear to me that this would be disadvantageous as there would be a lot of sites using that same broad keyword base that might not feature your specialized phrase.

Build the keywords base correctly

However, is it merely that enough for you to write a good article or blog post? Yes, only if you also plan on directing traffic to a particular blog or website, because the results could be localized too if you only know the area where you want to target. You could search on Google for the broadest phrases related to your area, and then if you want, drive traffic to that site. From a search engine perspective, it would be very difficult for a broad phrase to rank well, but it could be very powerful in terms of driving local traffic to your area.

From a user perspective, if you know your topic or product area very well then you could prepare content containing some of those keywords. For example “firearms training” could be one of your keyword phrases. On the other hand, you may know there are lots of visitors to a competing site that sells long-distance walking sticks, so you wouldn’t want to use a keyword phrase like that.

Another thing you’ll want to do is research the keywords that are used for research purposes. This will narrow down the selection of keywords to those that are more likely to be chosen during that search. After you have selected your topic you could even take the type of keyword tool and narrow the variety of keywords you want to include.

So as you can see, developing a keyword base structure is very important if you want to drive targeted traffic to your website.
